New chairs expand access to beaches

Wheelchair-bound visitors to Destin no longer have to watch their families from balconies and walkways.

With special chairs that have inflatable tires, it's now easy to maneuver people onto the beach who before might not have been able to see the Gulf waves crash on the shore up close. (...)

Wheelchairs can fly

He doesn't consider himself a pioneer, hero or even a role model, but Aaron Fotheringham, of Las Vegas, Nev., does hope what he does gets people to try new things.

"I'm just doing what I like," said Fotheringham, 16, the first person to land a back flip in a wheel chair. "I hope it inspires kids to get out there and try something new. It may not be jumping a stair set, but just something like seeing how fast you can push your chair."

"Wheelchair Cushion Selection - Making the Right Choice"
Kathy Fisher B.Sc.(OT), ATS, OT Reg.(Ont)
Occupational Therapist

Kathy is an Occupational Therapist working as an Assistive Technology Supplier and Education Manager for Shoppers Home Health Care in Toronto. Over the past 18 years Kathy has worked with a wide variety of client age and diagnostic groups with a special interest in pediatrics.

Kathy has presented at a variety of international conferences including the Canadian Seating and Mobility conference, International Seating Symposium, Medtrade, VGM Heartland Conference and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and is a faculty member of the RESNA Fundamentals in Assistive Technology Course.

There are numerous wheelchair cushions available on the market today; the choice may seem overwhelming to both clients and Assistive Technology practitioners. It is therefore extremely important to determine the goals of the equipment as they relate to each individual client.
