'Selling freedom'- Vallejo company modifies cars for physically handicapped drivers

Tucked away in a light industrial part of Vallejo, Driving Specialties, Ltd. has provided independence to an often neglected segment of the population for 30 years.

"We modify vehicles to enable physically handicapped people to drive and be independent," said spokeswoman Gretchen Peterson.

Driving Specialties manufactures, sells, rents, leases and services transportation products, said owner David John. That could mean attaching a left foot throttle or hand control to a vehicle, or outfitting it with a scooter or wheelchair lift. The firm sells wheelchair accessible vans with lifts or ramps with a lock-down system, allowing a disabled person to stay in their chair and travel comfortably and safely, he said. (...)
